Selling History: The National Vending Machine
April 20, 2012: ARTPLAY, Moscow.
Presentation in Moscow about the importance of everyday history, exemplified by the National Vending Machine. The machine contained 80 historical objects that visitors could buy, each with a label providing information on the history of the object and a video clip. When did we all start using tea towels? Where does the Dutch tulip come from? What made CND badges fashionable in the 1980s? The vending machine was a travelling exhibition. At each venue, the public could submit suggestions for historical objects they would like to see and own. The public could upload ideas and stories onto a special website.
